Flight fares are likely to increase due to increase in jet fuel prices in Pakistan.

ISLAMABAD – The Pakistani government has sharply increased the prices of commercial jet fuel, petrol and high-speed diesel, citing rising import premiums amid high global oil prices and renewed regional tensions.

The price of jet fuel has been hiked by Rs 40.35 per litre, taking the new rate to Rs 291.55 per litre, as the latest revision comes a few weeks after another hike, taking the total rise in jet fuel prices over the past two weeks to Rs 53.58 per litre.

The government also revised the prices of petroleum products, petrol by Rs 5.44 per liter and high speed diesel by Rs 31.05 per liter with immediate effect. The revised prices will remain in effect till July 20, with petrol now selling at Rs 316.15 per liter and diesel at Rs 354.35 per litre.

The petroleum division said the increase reflected the impact of higher international oil prices due to higher import costs and fresh regional geopolitical tensions. The decision was criticized by the All Pakistan Petroleum Dealers Association, which rejected the price hike and announced a protest strategy next week.

The price hike is expected to ripple through the entire economy. Petrol, which is widely used in private vehicles, motorcycles, rickshaws and small transport, directly affects millions of middle and lower middle income households. Meanwhile, a steep rise in jet fuel prices is likely to put pressure on airline operating costs, raising concerns over possible hikes in domestic and international airfares.

The daily petrol price decision has sparked backlash as pump owners have warned of a nationwide strike.
