8.7 million customers’ data compromised as a result of a cyber attack at three major UK airports
LONDON – A cyber attack targeting three major UK airports has compromised the data of around 8.7 million customers, with hackers reportedly demanding a ransom for the stolen information.
According to British media reports, Manchester, Stansted and East Midlands airports were affected by the attack. Information allegedly compromised includes email addresses, phone numbers, vehicle registration numbers and postcodes.
Data related to car parking, lounge and Fast Track bookings were also affected, while information on airport Wi-Fi users was reportedly compromised.
Manchester Airports Group said hackers obtained customers’ contact details, vehicle registration numbers and postcodes over the weekend. The group confirmed that the attackers demanded a ransom to return the data, but the company refused to pay. The amount sought was not disclosed.
The group said the incident did not affect passenger safety or aviation security at any stage. It also clarified that the compromised system did not include customers’ banking or payment information.
According to the company, about 8.7 million users were affected, with the majority of compromised data coming from email addresses. The information was mainly related to Wi-Fi registration at airport terminals.
The group said it became aware of the cyber attack on Tuesday and immediately blocked further access by the hackers. Affected users were also informed.
The company said the threat was present and necessary steps were being taken with the help of experts to protect users and its systems. The concerned authorities have also been informed.
Manchester Airports Group said it takes the security of customer information very seriously and apologizes for any concern or inconvenience caused by this incident.
