Fact Check: Viral ‘Mecca Drone Attack’ Video Is Actually 2025 Footage From Medina
ISLAMABAD β A viral video circulating online purporting to be footage of a Houthi drone attack on Makkah has been described as an old incident in Madinah that took place more than a year ago.
The clip, shared on Facebook, X and other portals, showed a missile flying through the night sky near a mosque and quickly spread across social media, with posts claiming it captured Saudi air defense intercepting a Houthi drone over Mecca.
Check the reality.
A video circulating today purports to be footage of the attack on Medina, Saudi Arabia, which is actually from September 2025.
It has nothing to do with today’s events. The video is outdated and is being misrepresented as new. pic.twitter.com/PGihEyyy8E

In reality, this footage is not from Makkah and it is not from 2026. This video is of an incident that took place on September 11, 2025 near Masjid Nabawi in Madinah.

The video gained new attention after an Israeli X account shared it with claims that Saudi air defenses shot down a drone over Makkah. This incident is the second attack on the holy city after 2017, the post said.
The account, described as an open-source intelligence platform with millions of followers, attributed the footage to the latest regional developments. The video caught a detail that changed the whole story: the mosque seen in the footage was not the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca. This was the Prophet’s Mosque.
Saudi authorities deal with a foreign drone near the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah on September 11, 2025. The incident reportedly took place at 5:40 am during Fajr prayer. People in the area reportedly heard a loud explosion, while reports at the time referred to a bright object or flying object seen in the sky.
No loss of life or property was reported. At this point, however, the exact nature of the object became the subject of competing claims.
During the recent attacks, the Houthis denied that they had targeted Mecca. A member of the Houthi political bureau called the allegations a “tired lie”, saying similar allegations had been made before. Another Houthi official said the group does not target Mecca or other Islamic holy sites and accused Saudi Arabia of making trumped-up charges against it.
Pakistan, OIC and Islamic countries strongly condemned what they called a heinous attack based on the Saudi position. However, these statements are part of a broader controversy over the reported September 15 incident and must be separated from the separate question of whether the viral video is genuine footage of the incident.
The Houthis’ alleged drone attack on Makkah failed, the Saudi coalition vowed to give a strong response.
