Private hospitals, clinics strike against FBR’s tax measures

ISLAMABAD – Private hospitals and clinics in several cities across Pakistan went on strike on the call of the Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) against the new tax measures introduced by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR).

PMA Faisalabad President Dr. Rai Arif and other officials said in a press conference that a symbolic strike is being conducted in private hospitals and clinics across the country against FBR’s Point of Sale (POS) system and sales tax on healthcare services.

The PMA said that taxing healthcare would directly increase the financial burden on patients and warned that protests could widen if their demands are not heeded.

PMA representatives said that doctors comply with tax laws but argued that it is not acceptable to target the healthcare sector for service tax.

He asserted that the protest was completely apolitical and said he did not want to create unrest in the country.

The PMA insisted on resolving the issue through negotiations, while warning that private hospitals across the country could be closed if their demands were not met.
