Amid the ongoing heat wave in Lahore, rain was predicted.
LAHORE – According to weather and disaster monitoring officials, hot conditions are expected to persist in most parts of Pakistan, while many parts of Punjab, including Lahore, may experience rain and thundershowers on June 11-12.
The National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC) of the National Disaster Management Authority has warned that from June 7 to 12, the southern parts of the country will continue to experience intense heat, while the northern and hilly areas may witness intermittent rain and storm activity. The advisory also highlights the increased risk of landslides and floods due to rapid melting of glaciers in the upper reaches.
Officials say that the low-lying areas of Sindh, South Punjab and Balochistan are likely to remain under severe heat stress, while the temperature in Central and South Punjab is likely to remain above normal. Upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad and North Punjab are also expected to experience unusually hot weather between June 7 and 10.
Rain and thundershowers are likely to occur in parts of Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and North Punjab including Rawalpindi, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Gujarat, Gujranwala, Sialkot and Lahore on June 11-12. Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir are also likely to receive rain at isolated places while some parts of North-East Balochistan such as Zhob and Musakhel are likely to receive light rain with thundershowers.
Weather is likely to remain hot and dry in most parts of Sindh, including Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Larkana, Mirpurkhas and Tharparkar.
NEOC further warned that rising temperatures are accelerating glacier melt in northern regions, increasing the risk of glacial leak-out burst floods (GLOFs), flash floods and landslides in valleys below. Officials have urged relevant departments to strengthen preparedness measures and advised the public to avoid non-essential travel and follow official safety guidelines.
