During the latest crisis in the Middle East, Trump says that China and Russia promised not to give Iran weapons.
WASHINGTON – US President Donald Trump said China and Russia had assured him they would not supply Iran with weapons, even as US intelligence agencies probed whether Moscow secretly helped Tehran launch precision drone attacks on CIA facilities in the Gulf.
In a post on his social media platform, Trump said that Chinese President Xi Jinping personally assured him during their recent meeting in Beijing that China would not under any circumstances supply or sell weapons to Iran. According to Trump, this commitment extends to Chinese companies as well.
The US president said Russian President Vladimir Putin had given him that assurance, insisting that neither world power was interested in strengthening Iran militarily. “The two countries that people often mention with regard to Iran, I believe are not involved,” Trump wrote, adding that any such involvement would be against his own strategic interests.
Trump also defended Washington’s arms policy, saying that the United States was not selling weapons directly to Ukraine, but to NATO allies. He said NATO countries pay the full cost of the weapons and their subsequent use is beyond US control.
Trump’s remarks come as U.S. intelligence officials investigate fresh evidence that Russia may have tacitly aided Iran in a series of sophisticated drone strikes targeting CIA facilities in the Gulf.
Intelligence analysts are investigating whether Moscow provided Iran with targeting intelligence, technical expertise or advanced drone technology used in the attacks. Officials familiar with the investigation cautioned that no final conclusions have been reached, but the remarkable accuracy of the attacks and Russia’s long-standing military cooperation with Tehran have intensified the scrutiny.
A classified assessment by a Western intelligence agency reportedly concluded that Moscow may have helped identify or target CIA installations in the region. Investigators believe the attack in Saudi Arabia involved a Russian-made version of Iran’s Shahid drone, two Western officials briefed on intelligence said. According to the assessment, one of the drones breached a vulnerable part of the embassy’s outer wall, before the second drone flew through the opening and exploded inside. Despite the damage, there were no casualties.
Trump has warned against resuming major military operations in Iran after the Houthi attacks.
