FBR busts yet another petroleum scam after fuel worth Rs 2.38 billion goes missing

KARACHI – A fresh petroleum scandal was reported in Pakistan after the Federal Board of Revenue revealed that petrol worth Rs 2.38 billion had gone missing from a customs bonded warehouse.

The discovery during a stock inspection at Port Qasim led to a major case of tax evasion, with officials alleging that the incident caused a loss of Rs 1.25 billion to the national exchequer and legal action was taken against the private company involved.

Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) documents show that the alleged fraud came to light during the examination of import petroleum consignments belonging to a private company. The investigation progressed when customs officials conducted a physical inspection of the stock at a bonded warehouse at Port Qasim, where major discrepancies were detected.

Documents show that the company imported 18,048 metric tonnes of petrol through three separate consignments. However, during the inspection, officials found only 9,699 metric tonnes of fuel in the customs bonded warehouse, leaving 8,348 metric tonnes of petrol unaccounted for.

Officials alleged that the missing fuel was removed without payment of applicable customs duties, taxes and levies, causing a financial loss of about Rs 1.25 billion to the national exchequer.

The case has now reached the Customs Court where legal proceedings have been initiated against the private company and its officials. Court documents detailing alleged tax evasion have also surfaced.

The latest development comes amid heightened scrutiny of Pakistan’s petroleum sector, as it follows another high-profile case in which a separate petroleum company was accused of tax evasion worth billions of rupees.
