Geely Starray EM-i, EX5 and EX2 Coming to Pakistan – Check Details, Expected Price, Launch Date
Geely’s arrival in Pakistan is not stopping at electric vehicles. Along with the EX2 hatchback and EX5 electric SUV, the Chinese automaker is also gearing up to bring the Starray EM-i, a plug-in hybrid crossover that could step up competition in one of the country’s fastest-growing automotive segments.
With the aforementioned models reportedly arriving in late 2026, the Starray EM-i will be imported first before local assembly begins. The launch is another step in Pakistan’s growing shift towards hybrid and electric vehicles, giving buyers another alternative in the increasingly competitive family SUV market.
The Starray EM-i looks almost identical to the all-electric EX5. Both SUVs share the same exterior styling, but underneath they are designed for different purposes. Instead of relying solely on battery power, the Starray combines a 1.5-litre petrol engine with a front-mounted electric motor and an 18.4kWh battery. Together, the system produces around 260 horsepower and 387Nm of torque, driving the front wheels through a hybrid transmission.
The Starray EM-i enters Pakistan with features that make it a strong contender in the plug-in hybrid SUV category. Internationally, it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in around 8.0 to 8.2 seconds before reaching a top speed of 170 km/h. On electric power alone, Geely claims an NEDC-rated range of up to 105 km, while combining the battery with the petrol engine brings the total driving range to over 1,000 km.
The Starray EM-i will enter one of the most competitive vehicle categories in Pakistan, where it is expected to go head-to-head with the Haval H6 PHEV and Chery Tiggo 8 PHEV.
The Geely is slightly longer and wider than both rivals while also offering the longest wheelbase, which can translate into better cabin space. In terms of electrification, its 18.4kWh battery sits close to the Haval’s 19kWh pack and the Tiggo’s 18.3kWh unit, while the Starray is distinguished by its claimed 105km electric-only driving range, which is slightly more than the HEVS’ 19kWh range. 90 km of Tiggo 8 PHEV under NEDC testing cycle.
By far the biggest unknown is pricing. Since the first units will come as imports, exchange rate fluctuations, import duties and taxes may push prices higher than expected. Charging infrastructure is another concern. Although plug-in hybrids rely less on public chargers than EVs, charging facilities remain limited outside of major cities, meaning many owners cannot take full advantage of the vehicle’s electrification potential.
Being a new entrant also presents challenges. Geely will need time to establish nationwide dealership network, ensure availability of spare parts and increase customer confidence in after-sales service. There are also long-term concerns about battery durability in Pakistan’s hot climate and how plug-in hybrids will maintain their resale value in the coming years.
Chinese manufacturers are expanding their hybrid and electric vehicle lineups as rising fuel prices encourage buyers to look beyond traditional gasoline-powered vehicles. The addition of another plug-in hybrid crossover is expected to increase competition, potentially with better pricing, better features, longer warranties and stronger after-sales service across the segment.
