1,400 Pakistani doctors have cleared America’s tough medical licensing exam USMLE.
ISLAMABAD – The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has announced that more than 1,400 Pakistani medical graduates have successfully passed the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) this year, another milestone for the country’s young doctors as they make their mark in the US, UK, EU and other regions.
PMDC President Prof. Dr. Rizwan Taj hailed the achievements and said that this is a growing success for the extensive reforms introduced by the Council in recent years in securing the path of Pakistani graduates to US residency training.
According to Dr. Taj, PMDC’s initiatives, including introducing competency-based curriculum (CBC), strengthening clinical training, and quality assurance initiatives, played a key role in improving the quality of medical education across Pakistan.
He said that Pakistani medical graduates continue to perform strongly in international licensing examinations and are becoming increasingly competitive for residency positions in the United States, reflecting the continued improvement in the quality of medical education in the country.
The PMDC chief believed that the council focused on aligning undergraduate medical education with international standards while increasing clinical exposure of students to better prepare future doctors for careers in the global healthcare system.
Describing this achievement as a proud moment for the nation, Dr. Taj said that every Pakistani graduate who succeeds at the international level represents the dedication and hard work of students, faculty members, academic institutions and the reforms implemented to raise the quality of education. He reiterated the council’s commitment to further strengthen medical education, support medical institutions and create opportunities for Pakistani doctors to excel internationally.
The growing success of Pakistani medical graduates is the result of the collective efforts of students, teachers, parents and medical institutions, and is a strong evidence that Pakistani doctors are gaining increasing recognition and respect in the global medical community.
The United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) is the mandatory licensing exam for physicians wishing to practice medicine in the United States. It is administered by the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) and the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME), and consists of three phases: Phase 1, which tests basic medical sciences; Stage 2 Clinical Knowledge (CK), which assesses clinical skills and patient management. and Step 3, which assesses a doctor’s ability to practice independently.
Widely regarded as one of the most challenging medical licensing exams in the world, the USMLE requires strong clinical knowledge, clinical reasoning, and decision-making skills. According to the latest official figures, the pass rate for first-time international medical graduates is 75% in Stage 1, 90% in Stage 2 CK, and 88% in Stage 3.
