Iranian envoy summoned to Delhi as India protests deadly strike on oil tankers.

NEW DELHI – Indian officials summoned the deputy chief of mission of the Iranian embassy in New Delhi and lodged a strong protest after Iranian missile attacks on two oil tankers near the Strait of Hormuz killed one Indian sailor and injured 10 others, two critically.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said it was “deeply concerned” by the attacks on the oil tankers MT Al-Bahiya and MT Mombasa while passing through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. The two ships had a combined crew of 46, including 30 Indian nationals.

According to the MEA, there were 12 Indians on board the MT Al-Bahiya, where one Indian vessel was killed in the attack while another was injured. The second ship MT Mombasa was carrying 18 Indian nationals. 9 crew members were injured in the attack, out of which the condition of two is said to be critical.

The ministry said it expressed its “deepest condolences” to the family of the deceased seafarer and wished the injured a speedy recovery. The MEA added that India’s mission and diplomatic post in the UAE is closely monitoring the situation and is in constant touch with the UAE authorities to ensure that all possible assistance is provided to the affected Indian ships.

The Iranian Deputy Chief of Mission at the Iranian Embassy in New Delhi was summoned by the Ministry of External Affairs on Tuesday morning, where India formally lodged a strong protest over the attacks.

Condemning the attacks, the ministry said it “strongly condemns attacks and acts of violence that target seafarers and disrupt free and safe navigation through international waterways such as the Strait of Hormuz.”
