Motorists get relief as motorway speed limit is restored to 120 kmph after fuel crisis eases
ISLAMABAD – After months of frustration and slow travel, motorcyclists across Pakistan can finally breathe a sigh of relief as authorities have officially restored the original speed limit on motorways and national highways, lifting temporary restrictions imposed during the global fuel crisis.
Daily inner-city commuters, transport operators, and families who were forced to adjust their travel plans from March 2026, when the government reduced speed limits as part of a nationwide fuel conservation strategy amid rising international oil prices, can finally move at regular speeds on highways.
Cars and other light vehicles are once again allowed to travel on motorways at a speed of 120 km/h, while passenger buses and heavy transport vehicles can travel at a maximum speed of 110 km/h, said Motorway Police spokesman Imran Ahmed.
During the last 2.5 months, the speed of cars was reduced from 120 kmph to 100 kmph and for heavy vehicles from 110 kmph to 90 kmph as part of emergency fuel saving measures. For many passengers, the restrictions were nothing less than long journeys, delayed deliveries and travel fatigue. Commercial transport operators, in particular, have repeatedly expressed concerns over the impact of reduced speeds on logistics and delivery schedules.
Officials were quick to make it clear that once the speed limit is reinstated, enforcement of traffic rules will remain as strict as ever. Motorway police warned drivers against taking the decision as a green light for reckless driving, stressing that speeding offenses will continue to be penalized under existing regulations.
“Reinstatement of the speed limit does not mean that road safety rules have been relaxed,” officials stressed, urging motorists to drive responsibly and stay within the officially prescribed limits.
The Motorway Police also reminded road users that any future changes in speed regulations will be implemented only through formal official notifications, warning the public not to rely on unverified reports circulating online.
