Mustafa Kamal resigned after the Pims tragedy? Here’s what we know
ISLAMABAD β Federal Health Minister Mustafa Kamal fueled speculation about his political future when he refused to directly confirm or deny reports that he had submitted his handwritten resignation to Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif.
In his interview with Hamid Mir, the minister faced criticism over claims that he had personally sent his resignation to the prime minister and that Shahbaz Sharif later refused to accept it. Instead of a clear answer, Kamal seemed to sidestep the question, and suggested contacting the source behind the report for clarification.
He also indicated that he could not publicly disclose every detail surrounding the resignation incident, including what steps have been taken and what is pending. His statement went beyond the resignation controversy, as he openly questioned the importance of holding a federal ministry, whether it prevented him from speaking about public safety and governance.
He said that if the political opponents want to remove him from the federal government, he will return to Karachi, adding that his return may bring fresh attention to governance concerns in Sindh.
The minister argued that even a short stay in Karachi would lead to criticism of the provincial administration, while a longer return could lead to demands for their permanent return.
Kamal also invoked the Gul Plaza fire tragedy, which claimed 72 lives, while questioning whether Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah or Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab had resigned after the incident.
His comments came amid his broader argument that public office cannot prevent an elected representative from raising questions on issues affecting ordinary citizens.
