Pakistan receives second Qatari LNG cargo amid energy supply disruptions
ISLAMABAD – Pakistan has received its second LNG shipment from Qatar this month, with the vessel “Shandong Redwood” arriving at the PGPL terminal on Wednesday morning under the country’s long-term LNG supply arrangement with Qatar.
According to the information provided, the cargo was bought at a price linked to 13.37% of Brent. The shipment follows another Qatari LNG cargo that arrived in Pakistan earlier this month.
The first September shipment was delivered on September 10, when the LNG carrier _Al Maruna_ docked at the Engro terminal with approximately 81,936 metric tons of LNG from Qatar’s Ras Lafan facility.
For both the shipments, Pakistani authorities held talks with Iranian authorities to facilitate the passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz.
The latest arrivals come as Pakistan’s power sector faces disruptions in gas supply, with prolonged power load shedding reported in many areas. Additional LNG is expected to provide temporary support for power generation.
Pakistan is heavily dependent on imported LNG for power and industrial sectors. Any continued disruption to LNG shipments through the Strait of Hormuz could increase procurement costs, tighten gas availability and put further pressure on power generation.
Meanwhile, Qatar has maintained diplomatic relations with Iran and other countries in the region while remaining a major LNG supplier.
Pakistan is also monitoring the availability of gas in its transmission system. Data on September 21 showed line pack at 4,792 million cubic feet, while power sector gas consumption was around 208 million cubic feet per day.
Gas consumption by the fertilizer sector remained steady at 89 million cubic feet per day. However, domestic gas production has been affected by disruptions in several sectors.
