People of Azad Jammu and Kashmir will vote. India can see.
The Election Commission of Azad Jammu and Kashmir has announced July 27 as the polling day for the Legislative Assembly elections. Nominations will begin on June 9. The schedule is out, the process is moving forward, and every political actor in Azad Kashmir now has a clear path forward. There is no ambiguity left. There is no excuse left.
Let’s start with what the government actually did here. Thirty-six of JAAC’s thirty-eight demands were accepted. This is no small concession, it is an almost total submission to the demands of an action committee through dialogue and democratic engagement. The dispute over refugee seats, which has been used as a rallying cry for months, can now be decided exactly where it belongs: on the floor of Parliament, by a vote, in less than two months. That opportunity exists because the elections have been announced. The government deliberately created this opportunity. It deserves recognition.
This makes it almost impossible to explain JAAC’s planned June 9 long march and lockdown on any logical basis. June 9 is nomination day. The most useful thing JAAC does for the people it claims to represent on June 9 is to file nomination papers, not block the streets. A party that enjoys genuine public support does not fear the ballot box. A movement with real demands uses elections to advance them. Parliamentary change is still available through the statutory process. 36 After the demands are met and the date of the election is published, a chaotic selection of candidates at that particular moment is not a protest. This is the obstacle. And the question of whose agenda this obstruction serves has a clear answer.
India is working overtime before July 27. AI-generated videos and fabricated content that appear to be authentic Kashmiri voices have been flooding social media for weeks. Production is Indian. The agenda is Indian. The people of AJK saw this immediately because they know what their own reality is like and don’t seem to care what New Delhi is scripting for them. This is not the first time that India has tried to create instability around the elections in Azad Jammu and Kashmir and it has failed every time. More than 3.8 million voters are registered for July 27, half a million more than in 2021 when turnout reached 61 percent despite similar interventions. The data does not suggest a population that wants to avoid Indian propaganda. They suggest a population that wants to vote.
If the JAAC continues on a confrontational path after conceding everything, after a date is fixed, after nominations are open, after Parliament becomes an available arena for their every grievance, the outcome writes itself. They are not serving the people of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. They are serving someone else. The state has made it clear that if this path is chosen, it will take all necessary measures to prevent anarchy, and it will be perfectly legitimate to do so.
The government has been wise, patient and generous. India has been predicted. The people of Azad Jammu and Kashmir have been consistent: they show up, they vote, they make their choices known through a tool that actually matters.
July 27 is the answer to India’s propaganda. It is the answer to manufactured chaos. This is the answer to every external power that has tried to convince the world that the people of Azad Jammu and Kashmir do not have the will or resources to govern democratically.
They do. They will prove it again on Sunday.
