The latest hike has taken petrol above Rs 334, while diesel is now just a few rupees away from crossing Rs 400 per litre.

The fresh fuel shock is expected to affect transport costs, commuting costs and household budgets, while businesses may also face higher operating costs. Any sustained increase in transportation costs could further put upward pressure on the prices of goods and services across the country.

For consumers already dealing with high living costs, the latest increase means another increase in the amount they will have to spend on daily travel and fuel. Transport operators and businesses relying on diesel may also pass on some of the additional costs to consumers.

Oil prices rose for a third straight session as tensions between the US and Iran threatened to disrupt energy supplies through the Strait of Hormuz. Hopes for a lasting deal have dimmed, with Iran warning of possible military escalation and the US rejecting an extension to a temporary ceasefire.

Tanker traffic through the strait has declined sharply, after one ship was reportedly struck by a projectile as it exited the waterway, raising concerns about shipping safety.

WTI was up 0.59 percent at $85, Brent was up 0.12 percent at $90.98, and Brent crude was up 0.51 percent at $98.20. Natural gas also rose 0.48 percent to $2.703.

Global oil prices hover around $91 as US-Iran tensions halt Hormuz shipments.
