The United Nations appreciated the role of Pakistan for international peace and security.
ISLAMABAD – Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Muhammad Ishaq Dar met United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres in New York on Wednesday.
The Foreign Office said in a press release that the Deputy Prime Minister is visiting New York to attend the signing ceremony organized by China under its chairmanship of the Security Council.
Dar praised the Secretary General’s commitment to the United Nations and multilateralism and acknowledged his continued support and strong cooperation with Pakistan. They discussed the recent regional developments including the situation in the Middle East and West Asia.
The Foreign Minister appreciated the Secretary General’s principled stand and support for Pakistan’s mediation efforts. He highlighted Pakistan’s successful hosting of the Islamabad talks in April, which represented an important diplomatic development. He noted that the ceasefire initially facilitated by Pakistan’s efforts continued, and reiterated support for continued communication and dialogue to achieve sustainable peace and stability in the region. DPM Dar reiterated Pakistan’s strong commitment to uphold the principles and objectives of the UN Charter and advance international peace and security through constructive engagement in the UN.
He welcomed the UN80 initiative of the Secretary General and appreciated his leadership in this regard. He stressed that the interests and priorities of developing countries should be at the center of the reform agenda. They also emphasized the importance of conflict prevention, peaceful settlement of conflicts, and strengthening peace-building and peace-building efforts in line with global realities.
Reiterating Pakistan’s longstanding position on Security Council reforms, the Deputy Prime Minister/Foreign Minister stressed the need for a comprehensive reform process based on the principles of sovereign equality, transparency, inclusiveness and broad-based consensus among member states. He added that these principles can be upheld only with the involvement of elected members.
Discussing developments in South Asia, the Deputy Prime Minister/Foreign Minister expressed concern over provocative and provocative statements by the Indian leadership that undermine regional stability. He emphasized that India’s decision to shelve the Indus Basin Agreement is a clear violation of international law, treaty provisions and established principles governing inter-state relations.
He emphasized that the Jammu and Kashmir dispute has been the core issue between Pakistan and India and reiterated that its just resolution in accordance with the relevant Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people is essential for lasting peace in South Asia.
The Deputy Prime Minister emphasized that a peaceful and stable Afghanistan is indispensable for regional stability. However, he expressed deep concern over the continued use of Afghan territory by terrorist groups against Pakistan and reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to its national security and the protection of its citizens in accordance with international law and the United Nations Charter.
On Palestine, DPM Dar reiterated Pakistan’s unwavering support to the Palestinian people and their legitimate struggle for right to self-determination and statehood. He commended the Secretary-General’s continued advocacy for the two-state solution and the implementation of the Gaza Peace Plan as endorsed in Security Council Resolution 2803.
Secretary-General Guterres appreciated Pakistan’s active participation in the United Nations and its continued contribution to international peace and security, including through diplomacy and UN peacekeeping efforts.
