US-Iran peace deal could be signed at upcoming G7 summit: reports
TEHRAN – Iranian officials have indicated that a proposed deal between Iran and the United States could be signed in the coming days, with talks underway to finalize an interim memorandum of understanding.
According to Iranian media sources, if the current conditions remain favorable, the signing may take place on the occasion of the upcoming G7 summit. He said that if any development does not disrupt the ongoing diplomatic process, an agreement could be reached before the summit begins. Geneva has reportedly been identified as the preferred location for signing the document.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the proposed memorandum has not yet been signed and is subject to possible changes. He said that all the details of the agreement will be made public after the completion of the negotiations.
Speaking to Iranian media, Araqchi said that the draft memorandum will consist of 14 points. He noted that matters related to Iran’s nuclear program have been postponed until a later stage, with current US demands on the nuclear file deemed unacceptable to Tehran at this time.
The Iranian foreign minister said the interim arrangements would include provisions to end hostilities on several fronts, including in Lebanon. He added that the agreement will focus on the lifting of sanctions and blockades on Iran as well as the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
Araqchi maintained that Iran had emerged stronger after its recent confrontation with the United States and said any ceasefire measures would be implemented within a broader transitional framework. He argued that future progress on the nuclear talks would depend on the successful implementation of the confidence-building measures included in the interim agreement.
Regarding the Strait of Hormuz, Araghchi said pre-war administrative arrangements would not simply be restored. He said that Iran will ensure the safe passage of ships through the strategic waterway while protecting its national interests. He also said that Iran and Oman will maintain responsibilities related to sovereignty in the region.
Separately, reports indicated that the situation in the Middle East is expected to be an important topic at the G7 summit. Discussions may include other international issues such as economic development, global partnerships, artificial intelligence and the conflict in Ukraine, as well as maritime security and broader regional stability.
The G7 group includes Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States. Heads of the European Union and invited partner countries are also expected to attend the summit.
