US-Iran standoff escalates after new strike near Bandar Abbas

KUWAIT CITY/WASHINGTON – Tensions between the US and Iran have risen sharply in parts of the Gulf region amid fresh military strikes, retaliation and increased air defense activity.

US forces launched new strikes targeting an Iranian military site that Washington believed posed a threat to US forces and commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. The operation comes amid already heightened tensions in the region over maritime security.

Iranian state media say the attack took place near the Bandar Abbas port. Iranian sources said that no casualties or significant losses were reported as a result of the incident.

In response to growing regional security concerns, Kuwait activated its air defense system on Thursday after what it described as “hostile missile and drone threats”. The Kuwaiti armed forces did not specify the origin of the threats but said any explosions were heard due to an air defense system intercepting incoming projectiles.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) later said it had retaliated against a US air base following an alleged US strike near Bandar Abbas airport. The IRGC warned that any repetition of such actions would attract a strong response.

The US Treasury Department announced new sanctions targeting Iran’s Persian Gulf Straits Authority, the agency responsible for regulating maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz and collecting transit fees. The department has warned that institutions cooperating with the authority could face sanctions because of alleged links to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

The development had an immediate impact on global energy markets, with oil prices rising more than 3%, including gains in both Brent crude and West Texas Intermediate futures.
