ISLAMABAD – A major diplomatic breakthrough is imminent as Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has confirmed the upcoming historic peace deal between the US and Iran, which could be finalized in the next 24 hours, possibly sealed with an “electronic signature” rather than a traditional ceremony.
Sharif said preparations are already underway for a digital signature, calling the emerging agreement a “historic opportunity” that could lay the foundation for lasting peace. He added that technical-level talks are expected to continue next week, suggesting that if a deal is reached, it will only be the beginning of a deeper diplomatic process.
At the heart of the revealing development, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi has signaled that a comprehensive accord with Washington is imminent. According to him, the draft framework goes beyond bilateral tensions and could include broader regional arrangements, including efforts to end hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon.
The proposed package reportedly includes major geopolitical and economic changes: reopening the strategic Strait of Hormuz, reducing or eliminating US sanctions on Iran, and negotiating at a later stage on Iran’s nuclear program. However, Araghchi emphasized that the nuclear talks would only begin after the initial steps of implementation were agreed upon.
U.S. officials have acknowledged elements of the framework but insisted that Iran’s economic relief will be strictly dependent on its compliance with its commitments, indicating that the final terms will remain conditional and contested.
Yet while talks appear to be gaining momentum, deep differences remain. Washington has reportedly hinted that Lebanon could be excluded from the accord, while Tehran is pushing for its inclusion, highlighting unresolved tensions over the accord’s territorial scope.
Meanwhile, the situation on the ground continues to deteriorate. Lebanese state media reported Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon, with evacuation orders affecting around 20 locations, raising fears that military tensions could undermine diplomatic progress.
The background to these negotiations is unstable. The conflict, which began with US and Israeli attacks on Iran on February 28, triggered a series of counter-attacks by Iran against Israel and US-backed Gulf states. Iran’s response reportedly affected activities in the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy corridor.
Although a ceasefire was reached in April, sporadic violence has continued, including new strikes on both sides this week. The fragile truce looks increasingly strained even as diplomacy intensifies.
US President Donald Trump added a dramatic twist, saying he called off planned strikes on Iran because negotiators were “closer to a wonderful deal” that could be signed soon. He dismissed Iranian media reports of the 14-point deal as false and insisted they did not reflect the actual terms being negotiated.
Officials acknowledge divisions within the Supreme National Security Council, with no final decision yet made. Approval is still pending, Araghchi said, adding that if the agreement is ratified, it will be signed digitally instead of in a traditional ceremony.
