More than 100 militants killed by Pakistani forces in ‘Operation Shaaban’
ISLAMABAD – Pakistan’s security forces stepped up Operation Shaaban in Balochistan, killing more than 100 militants this week in a coordinated counter-terrorism campaign. The operation, which includes ground strikes, airstrikes, and intelligence-based operations, is ongoing and will continue until the militant network operating in the province is dismantled, officials said.
Security officials said 16 militants were killed in the latest operations in the last 24 hours, of which seven militants were killed, while nine others were neutralized in earlier operations.
The ongoing campaign is being jointly conducted by Pakistan Army, Frontier Corps (FC) Balochistan and Provincial Police. Security forces have launched coordinated ground offensives, backed by air strikes, targeting militant hideouts spread across Balochistan’s rugged mountains and remote areas.
Officials identified the slain militants as members of Fitnah al-Khawarij, and alleged that the group had established operational bases in isolated areas of the province. He said the operation was aimed at destroying the group’s infrastructure, eliminating its fighters and preventing it from regrouping.
According to security sources, 64 militants have been killed specifically under Operation Shaaban, while a total of 102 militants have been killed since July 5, including intelligence-based operations across Balochistan.
Officials said the anti-terrorist operation remains active and will continue till every militant network operating in the province is dismantled.
Amid a fresh wave of terrorism in its regional neighbor Afghanistan, growing concerns over cross-border militancy and what officials describe as the involvement of foreign-backed terrorist groups, Pakistan has stepped up nationwide counter-terrorism operations.
The operation also follows a stern warning from the country’s top leadership, which recently announced that terrorism backed by hostile intelligence agencies would be countered with the “full might of the state”.
