Foreign women’s mobile data took a new turn in the Raza Dar case.
ISLAMABAD – The high-profile case involving two foreign women in Lahore has taken a dramatic new turn as conflicting accounts, fresh arrests, unseen photographs and claims of digital evidence have fueled public debate about what really happened.
According to reports, the police’s claims about the case have raised questions after a statement by a foreign woman and a photo taken shortly after the women’s alleged escape surfaced online. The photo shows the two women standing in fear with the traffic warden and policemen as they run away from the suspects and take shelter in a nearby shop.
Reports said that a traffic warden rescued the women after they ran into the shop and immediately alerted the police, who took them into protective custody. Authorities were reportedly trying to trace the women before they managed to escape.
Investigators widened the scope of the investigation. Police have reportedly arrested four additional suspects, bringing the total number of arrests to eight. Among those detained is a suspect known as “Boss” who allegedly broke his legs after jumping from a roof while trying to escape.
Dar allegedly planned the incident with another cousin, who is among those arrested. The report claims that the women were illegally detained for two days, during which they were allegedly sexually assaulted. It is further alleged that the accused forced the victims to make video calls to their parents demanding ransom and one of the accused transferred around $70,000 from a victim’s digital wallet to his own account.
The father of one of the women contacted the French authorities, who later informed the Lahore police through the emergency helpline. Police continued searching for two days before recovering the women, after which the Foreign Office and the French Embassy were informed about the incident.
During the investigation, TV host and blogger Mansoor Ali Khan presented an alternative account based on information he said was obtained from investigative sources. According to him, preliminary technical evidence and preliminary investigations do not support allegations of rape and instead point to a larger financial dispute involving investment transactions involving millions of dollars.
He claimed that digital evidence recovered from the mobile phones showed that the dispute centered on an investment of about $500,000 rather than the allegations that initially dominated the headlines. Khan further claimed that Raza Dar’s mobile phones were switched off when the police initially tried to trace the main accused.
Dar’s family themselves informed the police, voluntarily shared Raza Dar’s location, and requested the authorities to proceed to arrest him as per the law, the journalist said. Police later arrested Raza Dar from Lahore’s Defense area, while the two foreign women were reportedly recovered from near the airport.
The analyst further claimed that the investigators recovered the data from the women’s mobile phones after taking them into custody. Recovered digital evidence allegedly indicates that the women were involved in an investment business that accepted substantial funds from investors promising financial returns, before a serious dispute arose over the money. He further alleged that the investigation uncovered evidence of nearly half a million dollars in investments.
