The KP government has scrapped the proposed blue passports and other benefits for MPAs.

PESHAWAR – The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has withdrawn proposed amendments to the Members of Provincial Assembly Privileges Act, reversing plans to introduce new benefits for lawmakers, including an official blue passport.

According to reports, the amendments sought to extend the salaries and allowances of members of the provincial assembly and provide blue passport facility to the legislators and their families. However, the proposals faced widespread criticism on social media, after which Chief Minister Sohail Afridi ordered their withdrawal.

In a video statement with members of the provincial cabinet, Information Minister Shafi Jan said that a cabinet meeting was held on Friday chaired by Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, in which Provincial Assembly Speaker Babar Saleem Swati participated via video link.

Shafi Jan said that on the instructions of the Chief Minister and after consultation with the Speaker Assembly, the government has decided to withdraw all the controversial provisions of the amended law.

He further said that the disputed clauses will be restored to the original provisions. 1988 ActAnd a meeting of all parliamentary leaders will be held on Monday to discuss the matter.

The Information Minister said that the KP government, which he has formed on the basis of public mandate, will not take decisions against the wishes of the people. He also said that the government will listen to the concerns of journalists and the public.
