Global embarrassment for India as fake testing shakes Tejas fighter jet programme.
NEW DELHI – A procurement scandal has cast India’s Tejas fighter jet program in a bad light after the supplier submitted hundreds of fake testing reports for the aircraft’s key components. The issue came to light during an audit of HAL, prompting legal action and raising concerns about quality control in one of India’s key defense projects.
Indian state-owned aerospace company Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has initiated legal action against a Hyderabad-based supplier over allegations of massive fraud and submission of fake technical documents in the Tejas fighter jet Mk-1A programme.
HAL’s aircraft division in Bengaluru has placed 18 supply orders with the firm, TEC Aero Devices, starting from March 2022, as part of a major procurement series for the indigenous Tejas fighter jet.
HAL accused Hyderabad-based supplier Tec Aero Devices of forgery after discovering 199 fake test reports for 172 parts ordered for the Tejas-Mk1A program between 2022 and 2023.

The supplier was tasked with manufacturing and supplying several components after it submitted extensive compliance documentation, reportedly including 199 test reports that claimed to validate the components’ strength and durability. Based on these documents, the company was also approved to produce 35 different categories of components for the fighter jet program.
HAL called for original test records during routine quality assurance. The supplier allegedly failed to produce authentic documents, raising suspicions within the organization. The situation escalated when the company submitted a written apology, allegedly admitting that the test reports were fabricated in the name of a Hyderabad-based testing agency.
An official audit conducted by HAL on 29 November 2023 reportedly produced a damning finding: none of the 199 test reports submitted between February and September 2023 were actually issued by the claimed testing authority. The findings revealed that official names and signatures of the probing agency were misused without authorization to falsify the entire batch of reports.
Amidst the outrage, HAL has now initiated legal action against the supplier, a serious escalation in what is being described as a major breach of defense procurement integrity. The controversy comes at a sensitive time for the Tejas fighter jet program, which has recently faced increased scrutiny following several reported incidents. A Tejas aircraft crashed due to a technical fault during a training flight in Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer.
Last year, another Tejas jet reportedly lost control and crashed during a demonstration at the Dubai Air Show in the United Arab Emirates. More recently, in early February 2026, another Tejas aircraft was involved in a landing accident after a training mission.
Substandard components in the fighter jet supply chain can have devastating consequences, not only for the safety of pilots but also for the operational reliability of high-cost military platforms, and recent reports have raised serious questions about oversight, verification and quality control within critical defense manufacturing networks.
