Two dozen militants were killed in the Bannu operation, a blow to the Khawarij
Bannu – Pakistani security forces launched a major intelligence-based operation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Bannu district and adjoining areas, killing 24 suspected militants in multiple engagements in the last 24 hours, ISPR said.
In a statement, the army’s media wing, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), said the operation comes amid a recent surge in militant violence in Bannu, where attacks on police personnel and suicide bombings have heightened security concerns. According to ISPR, militants have targeted law enforcement personnel and civilians in several deadly incidents.
The military said that a coordinated operation was launched after intelligence inputs identified the whereabouts of those allegedly involved in the attacks. The security personnel exchanged fire with the militants as a result of which 24 suspects were killed. Arms and ammunition were also recovered during the operation.
The slain militants were linked to several terrorist activities and attacks on innocent civilians. It added that the operation will continue until those responsible for the recent violence, as well as their support networks, are eliminated.
The army termed the latest operation as part of Pakistan’s broader counter-terrorism campaign, which was approved by the Federal Supreme Committee under the National Action Plan. Officials said the operation was focused on dismantling militant networks and restoring long-term peace in the country.
President Asif Zardari praised the security forces for the successful operation and said that this result reflects their professionalism, commitment and sacrifices. He reiterated the government’s commitment to continue operations against militant groups and their facilitators, stressing that those responsible for attacks on civilians and security personnel will be brought to justice.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also appreciated the operation and termed the intelligence-based mission as important for maintaining peace and stability in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Appreciating the role of security personnel in the operation, he said that the success shows Pakistan’s continued determination to combat terrorism.
The latest operation marks one of the most significant counter-terrorism operations in the region in recent weeks, marking the state’s renewed push against militant violence as security forces continue coordinated operations across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Operation Shaaban is gaining momentum as Pakistan’s armed forces intensify their search for hard-line militants.
