US hails ‘genuine partnership’ with Pakistan on 250th Independence Day
WASHINGTON – US Secretary of State Natalie A. Baker described Pakistan-US relations as a “true partnership” rooted in trust, diplomacy and shared global interests.
Speaking at the 250th Independence Day celebrations organized by the US Embassy in Islamabad, Ms Baker said Washington was moving beyond “outdated assumptions” and towards a more pragmatic, cooperative approach with Islamabad. He emphasized that the two countries could benefit from closer ties, saying that a strong Pakistan is good for the US, and vice versa.
Baker described the current phase of bilateral relations as the most constructive in recent years, crediting the leadership of US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Sharif for moving the relationship towards a “results-based strategic partnership”.
He praised Pakistan’s military leadership, including Field Marshal Asim Munir, for their role in de-escalating tensions between the two nuclear-armed states during the May 2025 crisis. He said their intervention helped prevent a wider regional conflict and opened up space for new diplomatic engagements.
Baker added that Pakistan’s involvement in facilitating high-level diplomatic engagement between the US and Iran called Islamabad an important point of dialogue amid heightened regional tensions. He said that Pakistan helped facilitate the extended dialogue aimed at stabilizing the situation.
Describing Pakistan as a “nation of consequence”, he highlighted its strategic location, economic potential, and growing diplomatic influence, adding that its role was gaining international recognition.
In addition to the official remarks, Baker also shared personal reflections on his experience in Pakistan, including attending the revived Basant festival in Lahore, which he described as a memorable cultural moment.
The celebration also featured a cultural installation of 16 Liberty Bell replicas created by Pakistani artists and students under US Embassy programs, symbolizing the shared ideals of democracy, opportunity and freedom.
The remarks collectively underscored what officials described as a new phase in U.S.-Pakistan relations, including deeper engagement and expanded diplomatic cooperation.
Pakistan increased diplomatic pressure to reduce tensions between the US-Iran clashes.
