‘Pinky 2.0’: Karachi Police busts massive inter-provincial drug network
KARACHI – Karachi’s Korangi District Police have busted a major drug trafficking network in Landhi, arrested two key suspects from the same family and recovered 19 kilograms of high-grade crystal methamphetamine, commonly known as ice, worth more than Rs 250 million, according to police.
DIG East Dr. Farrukh Ali and SSP Korangi Fida Hussain Janwari while announcing the arrests in a press conference said that the action was taken on a tip-off in Landhi.
The arrested accused were identified as Zeeshan and his sister-in-law Hira, who according to the police were key members of a gang involved in drug trafficking and distribution across the country.
The police said that the alleged main woman accused of the network Mehwish was residing in Lahore while Hira’s husband Pervaiz was allegedly running the network in Karachi and is absconding.
DIG East described the case as possibly “Pinky 2.0” and said it appeared to be a family drug racket. He added that Hara’s son Hassanan was also allegedly involved in the network.
According to the police, the accused made their own brand of ice called “Cobra 728”, which was supplied across the country. These drugs were allegedly smuggled from Afghanistan.
Dr. Farrukh said that Pervez used to run a drug racket from a tire puncture shop in Landhi. Although the shop looked normal, the police alleged that drugs worth crores of rupees were being transacted through it. He also allegedly rented several houses to facilitate the network’s activities.
The DIG said the Landhi-based network belonged to an inter-provincial drug peddling group and the police had arrested two of its key members.
He said the network received shipments of up to 20 kg through couriers and vehicles. Hira allegedly avoided using a mobile phone and contacted Mehwish in Lahore through a business WhatsApp account on her daughter’s phone.
According to the police, the network’s links extended to Afghanistan, where a drug trafficker identified as Saber was allegedly involved in the supply of drugs.
DIG East said that the seizure was a major blow to the drug trafficking network and a testament to Karachi Police’s efforts to crack down on drug peddlers.
Meanwhile, Sindh Home Minister Zia-ul-Hasan Linjar praised the Korangi Police for the operation against the inter-provincial drug gang and said that the Sindh government will continue its indiscriminate action against drug peddlers.
